Austin Community College is proud to offer a variety of courses through our Elgin Campus for students eager to obtain training in organic food production methods and agricultural business skills.
We provide technical assistance and resources for market development to support family farm and ranch prosperity and enhance the vitality of our rural economy while improving healthy food access for all Texans. We are ramping up and we hope you'll join us.
As the Sausage Capitol of Texas with roots in agriculture dating back to the late 1800’s, we are capitalizing on the Blackland Prairies that have made agriculture successful here for over 150 years. Our community is focused on developing food production, supporting local farms and sustainable agriculture. In November 2010 Elgin approved joining the Austin Community College district with 61% of voters in favor. The community established the Elgin Local Food Network which evolved into the Texas Center for Local Food. Several USDA grants have supported the development of these programs in Elgin. February 2017 the Sustainable Agriculture facility at the Elgin Campus opened to the public to support the sustainable agriculture educational program that had been in place for three years. The Downtown Zoning Overlay approved in 2015 supported food production faculties and downtown Elgin is now home to three specialty food companies.
