The Elgin Police Department conducts a Citizens Police Academy at least once a year. The Citizens Police Academy last for 11 weeks and meets once a week and 1 or 2 Saturday’s during the class. Assistant Chief of Police Phillip Taylor has the responsibility for planning the Citizens Police Academy each year and usually arranges to hold at least 1 class in the fall of each year.
Every aspect of the department is discussed during the academy time and one of the Saturdays is reserved as a “range” day where participants can not only learn to shoot their own weapon better but can also get a chance to see and handle some of the department weapons under the direction of one of our Range Officers.
Acceptance to the next Citizens Police Academy is by application only and each participant must be at least 18 years old and pass a criminal background check prior to the first day of class.
