New Wildlife Habitat in Elgin!

Elgin, Texas– (8/10/17) – The National Wildlife Federation (NWF), America’s largest wildlife conservation and education organization, is pleased that Ben Scott in Elgin has successfully created a Certified Wildlife Habitat® through its Garden for Wildlife program. In addition, Ben’s habitat has been co certified with NWF’s state affiliate, the Texas Conservation Alliance.
NWF celebrates these efforts to create a garden that improves habitat for birds, butterflies, frogs and other wildlife by providing essential elements needed by all wildlife – natural food sources, clean water, cover and places to raise young.
This Certified Wildlife Habitat® garden is now also part of the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge, a national effort to create a million gardens that provide habitat for declining pollinator insects, like butterflies and bees. Read more about Certified Wildlife Habitat.

Depot Museum Exhibit

MORE STORIES- ELGIN ETC. A new book from The Elgin Historical Association.  Reading and refreshments Monday October 16th 7pm at First Presbyterian Church- North Avenue C and Lexington.
A very special display from before 1955-1956 will tell the history of early day telephone service in Elgin.  An original operator board from the Elgin telephone office has been rescued and will be cleaned and spiffed up. It is on display now in the exhibit hall.
A highly experienced ex-Southwestern Bell employee, retired after 34 years of service, Larry Foehner, has volunteered to work on it while it is already housed in the museum.
According to Foehner, this operator board may have been used in Elgin right before Elgin converted to dial in about 1955-56. The operators went from cranking the phone to get the operator, who answered by saying, "Number Please" to taking one finger to dial the number yourself.  These operator consoles connected you to local and long distance calls.  The Elgin exchange was known as ATlas 5 in those days.
Enjoy the beauty and history of the Elgin Depot Museum.  No admission.
Open Tuesday-Saturday, 2-5 p.m., or by special arrangement
