Hours Schedule and How to Become a Member

The Elgin Parks & Recreation Department had an amazing time hosting our Spring Break events and giving kids the opportunity to spend time in nature and away from their devices. At Giant Tennis, the Parks Department had a variety of sports equipment available to the public for use in the park at no charge, leading to a group of 33 kids and adults playing together at Elgin Memorial Park. On Tuesday Playground Games Thru the Ages had game historian Debora Marzec teaching kids how to be resourceful and imaginative when playing in the park, introducing them to simple games such as stacking rocks, and using Bruegel’s 15th century painting to find out how children played in the past. Clever Tiger then partnered with Elgin Parks & Recreation to bring a painting class to the public where kids learned how to shade, create perspective and more!

Field Day on Wednesday at Thomas Park saw the competitive side of our community as we played tug-of-war and more, while also expressing our playfulness! The Parks & Recreation Teen Council hosted a kickball game with celebratory popsicles for the public, and community member Jack Reid taught us how to play disc golf on Thomas Memorial’s 9 basket course. Thursday we went out to Morris Memorial Park to do catch & release at the pond. Over 48 people came out to participate in fishing, knot tying and more! We saw everyone from beginners learning how to cast, to seasoned pros, catching catfish, large mouth bass and bluegill perch.

To cap off the week, Elgin Parks & Recreation partnered with the Bastrop Master Gardeners to revamp the garden beds at the Fleming Community Center, just in time for Spring and the opening of Morris Memorial Pool. We worked hard to week, refresh and replant the beds leading up to the front of the Fleming Community Center, and our hard work paid off! We also saw the grand opening of the first Elgin Parks & Recreation Little Free Library where you can bring books, games and toys you think your community would enjoy, and take something new!

Overall the Elgin Parks & Recreation Department wants to say thank you for joining us for our week of Spring Break events, and we hope to see you at our events in the future! If you have questions about upcoming events through the Parks Department, you can check out our Facebook page, or call us at 512-285-6434.

Depot Museum

Elgin Depot Museum & Elgin Historical Association

So long to March, a dry month but not for Elgin History and Crape (Crepe) Myrtles!  In January, 1945, Elgin Mayor B. Christian advised that “1600 crape myrtle have been ordered” and all who placed orders were to place stakes with white strings or red strings on their property to designate the color of shrub that want planted. According to the Elgin Courier, when flowering, the shrubs would lend “an atmosphere of charm and friendliness to Elgin—The Crape Myrtle City.”  Look for some still blooming and history for your area, compliments of EHA.

The EHA meets April 9th at 4p.m. at the Elgin Depot Museum.

The Museum will be closed the week of April 15th- reopening Wednesday, April 24th (regular hours Wed., Thurs., Fridays 10a.m. to 2p.m.)
