Shop Elgin First

Shop Elgin FIRST

You can make a difference with your everyday shopping right here in Elgin!  Every time you choose to make purchases in Elgin rather than in some other community whether that’s filling the car with gas, buying groceries, eating at a local restaurant or stopping at the hardware store, you are making a positive impact on the place where you live!  When you shop in Elgin you support the businesses that build up and support our community.  Local businesses pay property taxes and sales taxes that directly benefit the services and programs in Elgin and Bastrop County.  They create local jobs, provide training for their employees, and support other businesses with their own business to business purchases.

Local businesses are the ones supporting the fundraising dinners, benefit silent auctions, donate for raffles, and sponsor sports teams, youth groups etc.  They are the ones who send volunteers to community events, and provide sponsorships for things like Western Days and the Hogeye Festival.  In short, local businesses are at the heart of everything that makes Elgin a great place to live.  Next time you find yourself thinking, oh I’ll stop in Austin, or I’ll just run in to the Walmart in Manor, take a minute and we hope you’ll decide to make those purchases right here in Elgin.  Every time you Shop In Elgin First, you are supporting the businesses who support our community!

Walk or Bike to School Day

Elgin ISD And the City of Elgin are promoting another Walk to School day on Tuesday, November 10.  Neidig Elementary,  Elgin Elementary, Elgin Middle School and Elgin High School have new sidewalks that provide safe routes to school for many of the students at those campuses.  Use this opportunity to check out the option of a safe route for your student and see if walking or biking will work for your family.  Booker T Washington Elementary school will be celebrating with morning recess and walking the track on campus.

This is a great opportunity to review safe walking and biking practices with your family, and to remind us all about safe transit in general.  As a driver, choose to practice no texting or phone calls while you are driving, look for pedestrians and cyclists, and remember to stop when a school bus is loading or unloading.  Walking is one of the best things we can do to improve and maintain our health.  Everyone can take advantage of the sidewalks around town and find a favorite safe route!  For more information visit:

Depot Museum

Depot Museum

The museum is open five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, from 2 - 5 pm. Admission is free.

The Elgin Historical Assn. is excited to announce that a special traveling exhibit called, "Quanah & Cynthia Ann Parker: A Pictorial Exhibit of Their Story," is now open.  It consists of over 40 rarely seen photos as they make their way around Texas, initiated by the Texas Heritage Trails program.  In 1836 Cynthia Ann was taken by a Comanche raiding party, and over years, she became wife to a Comanche Chief and mother to children, including Quanah. Cynthia Ann was taken back by Texas Rangers. Quanah became a very important Comanche leader. Many people know the basic story, and this show will demonstrate the tragedy of these two courageous individuals.  The exhibit will remain in Elgin until the end of the year.

Rotating Mini-exhibits add some sparkle about current holidays and events. The Museum also has an extensive photo collection and souvenirs for purchase. For inquiries call 512-285-2000. Read more or Follow us on Facebook
